De Groot moved to Cyprus to sign a 2-year contract in 2006. He returned home to his former Dutch club de Graafschap after one season where he became top scorer (9 goals) of the club. De Groot was on a contract in Doetinchem until 2009.

With the relegation of the club in 2008 and the expiration of his contract in 2009, De Groot has found himself a new club in January 2009. He signed a 1-year contract at Australian club Newcastle United Jet, coached by Gary van Egmond who is also from Dutch origin.

In January 2010 De Groot returned home to sign for the rest of the 2009-10 season at Go Ahead Eagles. His Australian coach who signed him a year earlier, was already sacked soon after his arrival. The new coach signed a new striker and also because of injuries he played just a few matches in Australia.

His contract at the Eagles was not extended and he went on trial at several clubs during summer 2010. In August 2010 he joined RKC Waalwijk on a 1-year contract. The 2010-11 season was successful for the club, winning the league and promotion to the Eredivisie. De Groot however signed a 2-year contract at just relegated Eredivisie club Willem II in June 2011.

Just before the closing of the transfer market, De Groot was released from his contract. In October 2012 he moved abroad to sign a 2-year contract at Belgian club Sint-Truiden.
