Ruud ter Heide went abroad in summer 2003 when he moved to Nordhorn. In his first season he made immediate impact scoring 24 goals. Werder Bremen showed interests and signed the semi-prof on a contract for the reserves of the German club. After one season, without chances to play for the professional team, Ter Heide returned home. In August 2005 he has signed for AGOVV Apeldoorn.

After three seasons in Apeldoorn with 51 goals, the striker decided to find new challenges in joining Cambuur Leeuwarden on a 3-year deal until 2011.

In summer 2010 in his final contract season, he moved to FC Emmen. The clubs agreed a transfer fee and the striker signed a 4-year contract until 2014. From January to June 2012 he was on loan at FC Zwolle.

Ter Heide announced his retirement as professional player at the end of the 2012-13 season. He was released from his contract by mutual consent. Ter Heide joined the amateurs of SVZW.
