Ruud van Nistelrooy confirmed his status as goal-getter. He made his break-through in the 1996-97 season at FC Den Bosch. Heerenveen signed the striker and he made immediate impact scoring 17 goals. Dutch giants PSV signed him already after one season in Fryslan and he played for Eindhoven for three seasons. In 2000 he suffered a bad and long-term injury but he fought back and recovered. Still recovering, Manchester United wanted to sign the prolific forward. He played from 2001 until 2006 in Manchester scoring an impressive 150 goals.

Before the end of the 2005-06 season, Real Madrid agreed to sign Van the Man on a three-year contract. At Manchester Van Nistelrooy fell out with manager Ferguson and found himself out of favour at the end of last season and there were also reports that he had a disagreement with United winger Cristiano Ronaldo.

After winning the top scorer title in the Netherlands and England, he repeated in Spain. At Real Madrid he scored 53 goals in his first two seasons. Van Nistelrooy his contract was expiring in June 2010 and because of hard competition due new signings there was no future for the Dutchman.

In January 2010 he moved to Germany to sign a 1,5 year contract at HSV. Madrid directors offered him a free transfer because of his good performances during his stay at Real.

Already during his German season there was a chance to return to Spain but the HSV directors denied Van Nistelrooy the transfer. At the end of the season, as a free player, he finally made his move. The experienced striker signed a 1-year contract at Malaga CF that sealed his return to Spain. He signed a contract until 2012 with an option for another season.

On May 14th 2012 Van Nistelrooy announced his retirement from professional football. He played his final match with Malaga against Gijon and ended a successful season in fourth position with his Spanish club. Van Nistelrooy had an impressive career scoring 249 goals in 19 seasons, winning five league titles and several other trophies. Three times Ruud won the title Player of the Year. His final international match was played against Hungary in March 2011 where he also scored a goal.
