John Metgod started his career at HFC Haarlem before he was signed by AZ Alkmaar. With the Alkmaar club he reached the heights in (European) football and he attracted several foreign clubs. Spanish giants Real Madrid signed the defender in 1982. Metgod played for two seasons in Spain before moving to England playing at Forest and the Spurs. In 1988 he returned home signing for Feyenoord where he played for almost six seasons. Metgod retired from professional as a player in 1994. During his career at AZ and Real Madrid, he received an international call-up for the Dutch team.

After his retirement he continued at Feyenoord and Excelsior in several (coaching) roles. On 11 November 2008, Metgod moved back to England when he was appointed first-team coach by Portsmouth. Already three months later he left the club when manager Tony Adams was sacked. Since 21 May 2009, Metgod is a first-team coach at Derby County.
