Ronald de Boer started his career in the youth academy of Ajax. From 1991-1993 he was on a contract at FC Twente before returning home. His first foreign experience started at FC Barcelona. He joined the Spanish club together with brother Frank in 1998. Both brothers have won most of the trophies at their Ajax period. After two years in Spain, Dutch coach Dick Advocaat signed the midfielder at Glasgow Rangers. in Scotland, De Boer experienced his best time abroad.

He went to Qatar in the season 2005-2006 to play for Al Rayyan. The next season he moved to fellow Al Shamal, also in Doha Qatar. His brother Frank decided to hang up his boots, but Ronald extended his contract at Al-Shamal with another season until 2008.

In March 2008 he announced his retirement. He was just recovered from an neck injury but decided not to play the rest of the season risking a new injury.
