Dorus de Vries started his career in the youth of Telstar. goalkeeping qualities were confirmed with a move to ADO Den Haag. In the 2005-06 season, he was not sure about a place as first goalie of the club and his contract was not extended.

In July 2006 De Vries moved abroad and signed a contract until 2007 at Dunfermline after a successful trial. Because of important faults from the goalie during the match against Inverness ended his first Scottish season in a relegation. A contract extension was therefore gone.

He went on a free transfer to Wales and joined Swansea City on a 2-year contract. Swansea City play in the English League 1. He extended his contract for another two seasons in June 2009. In 2010 he was awarded as goalkeeper of the year.

At the end of his contract in the 2010-11 season, he promoted with his club to the Premier League. In June 2011 however, he announced his transfer to the Wolves on a free transfer, a 3-year deal until June 2014.

With less match opportunities than expected, De Vries has left the Wolves in summer 2013. He signed a 2-year contract at Nottingham Forest until 2015. The goalkeeper was the number one goalie for his team and extended his contract until 2017. At the end of the 2015/16 season he was awarded as Player of the Season.

In August 2016 De Vries left Nottingham Forest to sign a two-year contract at Scottisch champion Celtic FC. Already in November 2017 his contract was extended with another season. In July 2019 Dorus de Vries retired from professional football. During his Celtic season he has won the most trophies (3x Scottish champions, 3x Scottish cups and 2x Scottish League cups).
