Marvin Emnes went to Middlesbrough in July 2008. Emnes has signed a 4-year contract worth 4 million euro, a record fee for Sparta.

In October 2010 he was loaned out to Swansea City for a month. On his home debut for Swansea he scored his second league goal against Leicster City after coming on as a half time substitute.

Emnes signed a three-year extension to his contract at the Riverside in 2011, tying him to the club until the summer of 2015.

In mid-season 2013-14 he made for the second time a loan move to Swansea City. He joined in January 2014 his former club until the end of the season. The club also used the option for a permanent deal to seal Emnes until 2017.

In August 2016 Emnes was loaned out to Championship club Blackburn Rovers for a half-season period. In summer 2017 he finally left the Island signing for the Turkish club until 2020.
