Braafheid moved abroad in June 2009. He joined Bayern München, the club of new Dutch coach Louis van Gaal. Braafheid has signed a 4-year contract until 2013 worth around 2,5 million euro.

After a half season with minimal chances given by his coach Louis van Gaal, Braafheid was allowed a loan-move to Celtic Glasgow for the rest of the 2009-10 season.

In the winter of the 2010-11 season, Braafheid continued his German career at TSG Hoffenheim. He signed a 3,5 year contract on a free transfer. Braafheid was not in the picture of coach Van Gaal anymore.

During the 2012-13 season, he returned home for a loan deal at FC Twente. In the 2013-14 season, Braafheid was not necessary anymore for the first selection and trained the whole season with the Reserves. He left the club disillusioned when his contract expired in June 2014.

On August 1 2014, Italian side Lazio Roma who just signed Dutch international defender Stefan de Vrij also announced the signing of Edson Braafheid. The former FC Utrecht prospect signed a contract for the 2014-15 season in Rome. He extended in summer 2015 with another season his contract. In summer 2016 he became available on a free transfer and in August 2016 he signed a one-year contract at his former club FC Utrecht. A year extension followed in June 2017.
