Dutch international David Mendes da Silva has signed a 3-year contract in July 2010 at Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg. The club was then coached by Dutchman Huub Stevens. In his first two seasons he became the captain of the team. In his final contract season, Mendes da Silva played just a few matches because of injuries and he was released from his contract during mid-season 2012-13.

In July 2013 Mendes signed a 3-year contract at Greek giants Panathinaikos until 2016. In his final contract year he had minimal first team opportunities and accepted the offer from the club to hang up his boots for the coaching suit. In October 2015 he continued his football career as assistant coach of the Greek club.

In June 2016 Sparta Rotterdam announced that Mendes da Silva will play for the club in red and white until the end of the season. Mendes da Silva joined Sparta on an amateur contract. He was offered an extension at the end of the 2016-17 period, but refused the offer and retired finally from professional football in July 2017.

David Mendes da Silva has played his international matches in the period 2007-09 while he was playing at AZ. He earned 7 caps in his career.
