Piet Velthuizen impressed the Dutch football at Vitesse Arnhem. He was developed at the Vitesse/AGOVV youth academy and received his first international call up in September 2009 where he played a friendly against Japan.

Goalkeeper Velthuizen moved abroad at the end of August 2010. He signed a 4-year contract at the Spanish club Hércules Alicante. His first season ended unhappily for the club and player. Hércules relegated to the Segunda Division and Velthuizen had financial problems with the payments from the club. He decided to use the relegation option in his contract and was available on a free transfer.

At the end of July 2011, he agreed a return back to his former club Vitesse Arnhem. Velthuizen signed a contract until June 2012. At the end of the 2011-12 season the club awarded Velthuizen a new improved contract until June 2016. During his last seasons, he was the backup of first choice Eloy Room. His contract was not extended and he left the club on a free transfer for another foreign adventure. Piet Velthuizen signed a 1-year contract at Israelian side Hapoel Haifa.

After expiration of his contract in July 2017 he moved to Cyprus on a 2-year deal at Omonia Nicosia. In January 2018, Velthuizen was released from his contract and returned home looking for new opportunities.
