Nigel Hasselbaink was a product from the PSV youth academy. He made his profesional debut during the second half of the 2009-10 season while on loan at Go Ahead Eagles.

On 23 August 2010 Hasselbaink signed for Hamilton on a free transfer following his release by PSV, after a trial. Over the course of the 2010-11 season the striker made 28 appearances for the Accies scoring 4 goals in the process.

In June 2011, St Mirren Football Club have confirmed that former Hamilton Academical forward Nigel Hasselbaink is their third new signing of the close season. He signed on a 1 year deal.

In May 2012, Hasselbaink turned down an improved contract from St. Mirren, later signing with St. Johnstone on a two-year deal. In July 2014 his contract expired and he left the club. Soon he found himself a new club in Greece. PAE Veria signed the forward on a 2-year deal until 2016. Hasselbaink was released by the club on 2 February 2015.

In February 2015 he re-signed for Hamilton Academical until the end of the season. He was released by Hamilton at the end of the 201415 season and then signed a contract at Dutch club Excelsior until 30 June 2017.

In summer 2017, Hasselbaink moved to Israel on a 3-year deal. He played a good 17-18 season and attracted the interests of other clubs. Hapoel Beer Sheva signed the striker on a 4-year contract for almost 2ME.
