Gibril Sankoh was born in Sierra-Leone and came to the Netherlands as refugee in 2000. He acquired the Dutch nationality in 2009 playing already for several seasons at FC Groningen. Sankoh moved to Germany in summer 2010 signing a 2-year contract at FC Augsburg. The defender left Groningen where he played for six seasons.

In December 2011 Sankoh extended his contract with another season until 2013 after a good first half. In February 2013, he moved to Chinese Henan Jianye Construction. In summer 2015 the defender returned to the Netherlands. He joined just promoted Roda JC Kerkrade for the 2015-16 season. During mid-season, he returned to China to sign a contract at second division club Meizhou Wuhau. Meizhou is playing at the second tier and is coached by Dutchman Luc Nijholt.

Gibril Sankoh retired from professional football in November 2017. He returned to the Netherlands and continued playing at the amateurs of ACV Assen in summer 2018.
