Sander Westerveld moved abroad in 1999. He was the first choice at Liverpool in his first two seasons. In the third season, a move to Spain was necessary to play. Also in his second and third Spanish season, Westerveld was the first goalie. From then, he had big competition at Mallorca, Portsmouth and Everton. Back in Spain in 2006, he became the first choice again. He had signed a one year contract with the ambitious side of Almeria (Segunda División) until 2007.

When his contract expired, he tried to find his luck elsewhere but could not agree a new contract abroad. He returned home and signed for Sparta for a half season, hoping for an ambitious foreign side that wants to sign him to finish his goal career. He finished the season 2007-08 at Sparta. Westerveld is currently searching for a new club to sign for the new season.

In June 2009 he was on trial at FC Utrecht and only a successful medical check was sufficient for a 1-year contract for the 2009-10 season. However he failed the check and no contract was agreed.

At the end of August 2009 he announced to continue his career in Italy signing at the club of Clarence Seedorf, AC Monza. After a successful first season featuring in 30 matches in the Serie C, he extended his contract with another season until June 2011.

When his club relegated after the 2010-11 season, he left the club looking for new opportunities. He moved in August 2011 to South Africa. Westerveld signed a 2-year contract at Ajax Cape Town until June 2013.

In July 2013 Sander Westerveld retired from professional football. Westerveld wanted to stay in South Africa for another season and was offered and accepted a job as goalkeepingcoach at Ajax Cape Town.
