In June 2011 Vitesse youth academy product Stijn Schaars moved abroad. The Dutch international signed a contract until 2014 at Portuguese giants Sporting club de Portugal.
In July 2013 he returned home. Together with teammate Arias, Schaars signed a contract at PSV for a combined transferfee of 1,6M€. Schaars signed a 3-year contract in Eindhoven. During his stay he has won the Dutch league twice, became captain of the team, but in the second part of his contract seasons he suffered from an injury for a long period. At expiration of the contract in 2016, he was not offered an extension and Stijn Schaars became available on a free transfer. At the end of July 2016 he signed a 2-year contract at SC Heerenveen. During the 2017-18 season the Heerenveen captain his contract was extended with another year. At the end of the 2019 season he retired from professional football. The defensive midfielder suffered from injuries and decided to quit. He contined in football as coach and is currently coaching at the youth of PSV Eindhoven, one of his former clubs. | |
