Ajax youth academy product Marvin Zeegelaar moved abroad in summer 2011. The young winger signed a 4-year contract at Espanyol Barcelona. He was in the selection of the Reserves, Espanyol B. After a difficult season in the Reserves in Spain, he returned home and was released from his contract. Zeegelaar went on trial at RKC Waalwijk in summer 2012 but was not offered a contract.

In August 2012 he signed a 4-year contract at Turkish club Sanica Boru Elazığspor. During his Turkish period he played a loan half season in England until December 2013. Zeegelaar was released from his contract in May 2014 and joined Portuguese outfit Rio Ave in August 2014 on a 2 year deal.

In December 2015 Zeegelaar signed a 4,5 year contract at Sporting Clube de Portugal. The club from the Portuguese capital Lisbon paid an amount of 400k euros for Zeegelaar. In his new contract there was the option that other clubs can buy him for a transfer amount of 45 million euros. Starting as a winger, he moved more and more back to the defence.

In November 2016 Zeegelaar was called up by coach Danny Blind for the first time as international. However he stayed at the bench during matches against Belgium and Luxemburg.

In summer 2017 his good play as defender in Portugal was confirmed by a transfer to England for around 3ME. Watford signed the back on a 4-year deal.
