Michiel Hemmen moved from AGOVV Apeldoorn to Belgian club KFC Westerlo in January 2012. He was signed for the rest of the season to help the club against relegation. Hemmen played a few matches due to injuries. He was not able to help the club being relegated and was released at the end of the season. In June 2012 he returned home signing a 1-year contract at SC Cambuur Leeuwarden. He extended his contract soon with another two seasons until June 2015.

At the end of July 2015, the forward moved to Sweden to sign a 3-month short term contract at BK Hacken from Gothenborg Sweden. His contract expired and he became available on a free transfer. In January 2016 Hemmen signed a 1,5 year contract at Excelsior and returned to the Dutch Eredivisie. In July 2016 Hemmen returned to his former club SC Cambuur and signed a one-year contract.

In summer 2017, he moved to FC Emmen on a amateur contract for the rest of 2017. His ambition was to continue his career in 2018 in an Asian league. In September 2018 he joined FC Lienden.
