Talented winger Ola John moved abroad in summer 2012. He signed a 5-year contract at Portuguese giants SL Benfica. The FC Twente youth academy product moved to Portugal on a 9ME deal.

In mid-season 2013-14, John signed a loan contract for the rest of the season at Germany club HSV, then coached by Dutchman Bert van Marwijk.

At the 1st of September 2015 Ola John moved to Reading on a loan deal until the end of the season. Reading was just relegated and has to compete in the Championship in the 2015-16 season. John his contract at Benfica lasts until 2017.

Benfica renewed the contract with John with one more year until June 2018 and send him on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers in August 2016 until the end of the season. His loan period was terminated in January 2017 and continued at Deportivo la Coruna in Spain. After expiration of his contract in July 2018, he continued his stay in Portugal at Vitória Guimarães SC. John signed a 3-year contract.

On 6. February 2013 he played his only A international cap - a friendly match against Italy.

Ola John is the young brother of professional football players Collins and Paddy John who also played abroad in their careers.
