Dutch international Kevin Strootman is a product of the Sparta Rotterdam youth academy. After making his first team debut at Sparta, his talent was spotted by FC Utrecht and later on he was transferred. In 2011 he made a big move signing together with fellow midfielder Dries Mertens for PSV Eindhoven. In two seasons Eindhoven Strootman made it to captain and proved his qualities. Foreign clubs became interested in the Dutch international. In July 2013, AS Roma agreed a deal with PSV and offered Strootman a contract. For a giant fee of almost 20ME, he joined the Italian side on a 5-year contract. Strootman became injured soon after his arrival but recovered and became one of the solid players in Roma. In May 2017 he therefore extended his contract until 2022.

In summer 2018 he changed Italy for France signing for Olympique de Marseille on a 25ME fee. Strootman signed a 5-year contract until June 2023. In his first years he showed his qualities and was given regular play time but that changed after a new manager was appointed. In winter 2020/21 he decided to return to Italy to join Genoa on a hire for the rest of the season with getting more playing opportunities.
