Gerrit Visser was the first Dutch player moving abroad for professional football. After being successful at Stormvogels (Telstar), he emigrated in 1925 to the USA. Meanwhile he featured in the Dutch national team playing at the Olympics of 1924 and several friendlies. In February 1926 he signed from Bethlehem Steel playing in the American Soccer League. After a year he moved to Detroit Holley Carburetor F.C. until 1931. Visser acquired the US nationality and therefore was not called up anymore for the Dutch national team. He never returned to the Netherlands and passed away in December 1984 in the state of Washington, USA. |
